The Arch at Cribbs Causeway - 2 Hours

This Case Study describes the design of a complex arch at Cribbs Causeway, on the outskirts of Bristol. The trainee is presented with slides showing aspects of the analysis, design and erection and asked to consider key aspects with a list of questions.This followed by an interview with Ian Duncan CEng FIStructE, the designer. Understanding Structural Behaviour - 10 Hours

The course on which this e-version is based, was originally commissioned by the Arup Partnership in the 1970s. It has been run since then for prestigious clients worldwide and addresses an increasingly important aspect of structural design; understanding how the structure behaves. This is an essential first step in the design process and will lead to an approximate analysis as a check against the computer output. Training Outcomes

By the end of the course you'll be able to: draw the qualitative solution for the deflected shape, reactions and bending moment diagram for a range of two-dimensional frames; explain the relationship between the diagrams and how each one can be checked against the other two; from the reactions, draw the axial and shear force diagrams; demonstrate the internal equilibrium at nodes and reactions.

Understanding Structural Design - 8 Hours

Please note that completion of the e-course or the taught course, Understanding Structural Behaviour (USB), is a pre-requisite.

This course provides an overview of the design process by reviewing existing structures, with an extension of the USB course to three-dimensional structures, an analysis of structural failures and the application of an approximate analysis to two iconic structures.

After you have completed this course, you'll be able to describe and discuss the process of creating the structural model; understand the distinct stages of the full design process; explain the application of an understanding of structural behaviour to the creation of the engineering model; describe the range of checks you should carry out on the results of the computer analysis; and demonstrate an understanding of the load distribution for an existing structure.

Understanding Structural Analysis V2 - 8 Hours

This is the third and final course in the suite Understanding Structural Modelling. The focus is, of course, on the behaviour aspect of analysis and the now crucially important application to the checking of computer output. It is particularly aimed at recently qualified graduates or engineers returning to the design office.

Training Outcomes

You’ll be able to solve simple structures using QSE or your own software and hand calculate results; determine structure and member equilibrium; understand slope-deflection equations and the stiffness method of analysis; apply the moment-area method to determine displacements and moment distribution to the approx analysis of 2D frames; understand the flexibility method of analysis and its application to structural sensitivity. This course completes the Understanding Structural Modelling suite.
